How to decide if a delivery or ride offer is worth it

Apps show you the pay and a rough distance, but not what the trip costs you or how long it really takes. This calculator turns an offer into numbers you can compare quickly: your profit on the trip, your profit per hour and your profit per mile, checked against the hourly target you set.

How this calculator works

Trip cost is the total distance multiplied by your running cost per mile. Profit is the offer pay minus that cost. Profit per hour is the profit divided by the trip time in hours, and profit per mile is the profit divided by the distance. If your profit per hour reaches your target, the result says "Worth it", otherwise it says "Not worth it".

A quick example

Say an offer pays 8.00 for 5 miles and 20 minutes, and your running cost is 0.27 per mile. The trip costs 1.35, so your profit is 6.65. That works out to about 19.95 per hour and 1.33 per mile. Against an hourly target of 18, it is worth it. If the same offer took 30 minutes, profit per hour drops to 13.30 and it would not meet that target.

How to fill in each box

Total distance: include the drive to the pickup, not only the paid part, and add the return drive if you expect to go back empty.

Total time: count driving, waiting at the restaurant or pickup, and the hand-off. Waiting is the part drivers most often forget.

Running cost per mile: use the result from the cost per mile calculator. The button above fills in the figure you last calculated there.

Hourly target: the profit per hour you need for the work to be worth your time. One way to choose it is to think about what you could earn per hour elsewhere.

What this does not capture

Tips you can't see before accepting, long waits, empty miles after the drop-off, bonuses, and the chance of getting a better offer soon are not in the calculation. Treat the result as a fast first filter, not a promise.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good hourly target?

It depends on your area and your situation. Remember that this figure is before tax and that you pay for your own vehicle, insurance and downtime, so many drivers aim higher than they would for a regular job.

Should I include the tip?

Include it only if the app shows it before you accept. If tips are hidden, you can run the numbers with and without a typical tip.

How do I handle stacked orders?

Add the pay, distance and time of every order in the stack, and run the combined numbers.

Estimates only. Results depend on the numbers you enter.
